R. O. > In the recent papers, the starved bees had higher JH titres.  In winter bees, the JH titres contrarily are much lower (due to the high Vg titre).

The understanding of Vg and JH has evolved over time. In 2002:

> The protein status appears to be a major determinant of honeybee lifespan, and the lipoprotein vitellogenin seems to play a crucial role ... the previous life histories of workers do not constrain them from becoming winter bees as long as they get ample food and time to build up their protein reserves before wintering.

In 2016:

> The bees that experienced larval starvation had fewer ovarioles, higher hemolymph JH titer and lower sucrose responsiveness, but had no change in Vg mRNA. These results confirm the occurrence of a previously identified disconnection between Vg and JH (Ihle et al., 2010).
