What I do with excluders is leave them off until there is some brood in the super. Then put the excluder on and the bees will go right through to store honey and feed the brood. This works especially well if the brood in the top brood box extends right to the top bars and there is no honey cap above the brood. Often I end up not needing the excluder as the bees fill the supers without the queen crossing the honey cap. The other thing is to wait until 3 weeks from extracting and then put excluders on. This gives the brood time to emerge, and lets the workers back fill the brood area.Dave
