I use Ron Brown's method of a teaspoon of thymol in an emptied teabag  
placed above the brood for warmth. I normally keep very few hives in each apiary 
 and, where I share a site with an apprentice, we ensure that our hives 
have  different orientation and appearance to minimise drifting.  Mite drop has 
 been very low this year but has recently risen to about 1 a day.
