Bee space is not a unit, it's a range. Dadant established the one and one half inch spacing 100 years ago but the Root spacing became standard. I think Dadant was right. Beyond that, in the forty plus years I have been a beekeeper, out of hundreds of beekeepers' hives I have seen, less than 1% of commercial beekeepers use 10 frames in a box. Frankly, that says more to me than any "rationale," but whatever. You use what you are used to.
