>Just finished reading the chapter on the start of California beekeeping and
the exploits of one J.S.Harbison. Packed 67 colonies on a month-long boat
trip from PA via NY and Panama to San Francisco and arrived with 50 viable
>colonies all in 1857.
In 1877 a Ligurian hive from Harbison of the Santa Clara Valley in
California was shipped to Australia. It measured 20 inches square and 3 1/2
feet high. When they go to Honolulu they were allowed to fly for a day
which I have previously posted about. Apparently there had been 3 or 4
previous shipments that did not survive the trip.
