Hello!

The newest issue of the Old Pueblo Archaeology bulletin – number 84 – has
just been published, bringing Old Pueblo Archaeology Center closer to being
back on schedule with our quarterly electronic publication!

This issue’s lead article ’O’odham Traditions of the Sivañ Va’aki was
written by Dr. Harry J. Winters, Jr., author of the comprehensive and
definitive volumes ’O’odham Place Names and Maricopa Place Names. In this
issue he relates some of what he has been told over the past many years by
his ’Akimeli ’O’odham (later called Pimas by Europeans) and Tohono ’O’odham
(formerly known as Papago) friends about events that took place in southern
Arizona around 1450 CE, especially as relate to the Great House (Sivañ
Va’aki) that is now preserved in the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. He
writes that these ’O’odham narratives tell about the old ’O’odham religion
and origin stories, historical ’O’odham curers, and two powerful headmen,
Sivañ Maakai and Jenashad, who lived in the Sivañ Va’aki. Eventually, as Dr.
Winters was told by his informants, the ’O’odham became angry with Sivañ
Maakai and Jenashad and their followers, and killed or drove them out of the
territory, apparently because these men were believed to be malevolent
witches who were causing sickness and death, or crop failure, or corrupting
people, or by aiding enemies of the ’O’odham.

According to Dr. Winters, Sivañ is not a personal name, but a title that
implies meanness and cruelty. Sivañ also happens to be the O’odham word from
which archaeologists coined the name “Civano” to refer to the Hohokam
archaeological culture phase that lasted from about 1300 to 1450. This
bulletin’s second article – On the Meaning of the Name “Civano” – discusses
the Civano phase and the Hohokam archaeological phases that preceded it, and
how the Civano name has been adopted by some modern, nonarchaeology-related
Arizona organizations apparently without much awareness of the term’s
history.
