In this country the public throw away huge amounts of food after they have bought it - that has been known for some time. Now we have a series of programmes on the television presented by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall 'War on Waste'.
What is interesting is not only the amount of perfectly good food discarded by supermarkets (past sell-by dates), but also the amount that is thrown away simply because it does not meet the supermarkets cosmetic standards. Crops just ploughed in.
I could easily be persuaded that 21/2 is a conservative estimate - but not in this house!
