I was told long ago by a second generation beekeeper that back when they set up bees as singles in long lines (his dad would actually establish a string line to keep all hive perfectly straight) that in a honey flow the hives the furtherest down wind would invariable capture the largest quantity of surplus honey
Last spring in OK I had a yard set like this in the road ditch. The 3-4 hives on the downwind end would be absolulty mugged with bees. The winds were always strong -15mph low side during the day. We solved the issue by making the end hives 4 deep hive bodies and 2 supers.
This was a row with 20 pallets in.
When the wind shifted so would the drift.
