I am a staunch advocate of marked queens. All new hives, be they nucs or
packages, start with a marked queen following the international queen
marking code

I'm amazed every spring how few marked queens are in my hives. No hard
numbers, but my conservative guess is
fewer than 50% queens
are marked the following spring. I can't say if it's supersedure or the
paint wore off. Probably a combination of the two.
