Its mentioned in some old text,  and I have been told the same before also.  (Hard with piles of cobs laying around)  So I would say it has to be a plant issue, not pesticideI am sure I learned it back in the 70's

I never have heard of this? What causes the death, the pesticide in the
plant or the plant itself?
