Job/ Paid Internship Opportunity - Historian/Historic Preservation Specialist The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Municipal Financing & Construction Element (MFCE) seeks a Historic Preservation/History specialist to conduct research on the history of sanitation, with the goal of producing a historic context report on water-related infrastructure in New Jersey. The MFCE provides low interest financing to water and wastewater utilities to improve water infrastructure (including sewer, stormwater, and drinking water systems). Projects receiving funding from the NJDEP must comply with the National Historic Preservation Act. The MFCE is developing research on historic water infrastructure to ensure the protection of significant cultural resources and streamline compliance with historic preservation requirements. The successful applicant will work closely with MFCE cultural resource professionals and have the opportunity to guide the direction and scope of the research based on their interests and experience. The ability to conduct background research, identify and review primary and secondary historical documents, and analyze and synthesize data into a comprehensive report is required.

Position Details:
Temporary hourly position through June 2020
Flexible work schedule (20-30 hours/week)
Work Location: Trenton, New Jersey

Minimum Qualifications:
*                     Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Architectural History, History, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field

*                     Demonstrated ability to conduct historical and archival research
*                     Excellent research, writing, and editing skills

Experience or skill in any of the following areas will be helpful:
*                     Master's degree in hand or in progress
*                     Experience and interest in one or more of the following fields: environmental history, historical archaeology, industrial archaeology, urban history, public health history, water/wastewater infrastructure
*                     Previous experience in cultural resource management or historic preservation
*                     Ability to work both independently and as part of team, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills
*                     Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places standards and Section 106 review
*                     Experience with GIS, digital history, or related skills
