Pete, the problem here has been the context.  "Adaptation" has MANY meanings in biology. So, in population genetics, adaptation is a shift in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which is what you are defining as "adaptation" here.  However, the conversation on this list has not been confined to Hardy-Weinberg. The range of definitions of "adaptation" that we have been discussing isn't teleological, it's just confused.

It's helpful to get the definitions right, then we are all on the same page.
