Presumably a problem with her ovaries? I have certainly had queens that did
not lay eggs (not many it's true) and also queens that stopped laying eggs
in later life (not just a temporary pause, but a complete stop).

Not always - I have seen a queen return from a mating flight after 6 weeks -
yes weeks - and go on to a long and fruitful life.
