<how can there be sustainable growth?>
Growth means a lot more than more population. In this context it generally
means higher standard of living. So in answer I would say, improved yield,
technology, medical advances, human rights protection etc etc.

<A survey reported on television last night showed that most people believe
that their children will have a worse life than they have had - that is
bad.>
That means they have a bad outlook, doesn't mean it's actually going to
happen. I'm also betting you will get the same results anytime there is
any significant economic downturn, and I bet you never get those results
when the economy is booming.
