I bought one and it was perfect for what I wanted to do. Which was: to collect an ounce or two of pollen every 3 or 4 days. 

I would just leave it open so the bees could ignore it, and then flip the grid down for 10 or 15 minutes late in the day. As soon as I had my sample, I switched it back off. 

These small traps are inadequate for serious pollen collection. It is cheap easy to make an O.A.C. pollen trap from scratch which has none of the drawbacks you mention
