There is no vetting for factual accuracy in popular journals. Would that were so, but it ain't. 

Scientific journals sort of lean on the credibility of the researchers, and often green light dubious conclusions based on sparse data. 

That's why it's crucial to seek multiple sources of info and produce consensus conclusions, rather than hang on the results of one experiment, locked as it is to location, time, methodology etc
