>> Can you control the dose per hive? How much of the oxalic avid is broken
down to water and carbon dioxide by the smoker heat?
I think the dose is controlled very well; however as far as scientific
answers I do not have that capacity, sorry, I am just not there yet. I will
tell you what I have tried and you can judge for yourself, and hopefully you
or someone else will be able to improve the method.
I use strips of aluminum foil (about 1 inch by 6 inches) fold one end up
about an inch and crease the sides to form a pocket to hold the oxalic acid
dose. That pocket is placed over the deflector tip of the Pyropen inside the
smoker; the long end of the foil strip is folded over the edge of my smoker
to hold it in place when the smoker lid is closed. I should state for
clarity that the deflector tip is the only part of the Pyropen that is
inside the smoker, and that no other smoker fuel is used. I did experiment
with adding oxalic acid with other fuels (thyme and anise hyssop) but it
left too many questions that I could not answer. Also note that the Pyropens
heat output is adjustable from about 25 to well over 100 watts.
Cheers
