I've seen this thought recently here, but don't understand the logic. First of all, the total number of mites in a colony isn't as important as the percentage of bees that are infested. And secondly, using alcohol wash gives you a pretty good estimate of the percentage of bees that are infested. So there is much more information gleaned than 'you have mites'.
