My understanding that at least in Oz it was because beeswax was required
for insulation on fine wires used in electronic components.
Oh, and the gov requisitioned all(?) beekeepers trucks. One family I
know managed to keep one as it had been modified to carry five across
the front. One sat outside the driver.
