I already pointed out that this cannot be true.
The most recent estimate of number of beekeepers in US is 115,000 to 125,000. (National Honey Board, 2012)
1% of 2.6 million hives is 26,000 hives.
Even if there are only 100,000 sideliners, 1% would only allow them 1/4 hive each.
Like I said earlier, given that a sideliner owns anywhere from 1 to 300 hives, a very conservative estimate would be 10 hives per sideliner.
= A million hives.
* On the other hand, it's pretty clear that 99% of the beekeepers are NOT commercial.
