Easiest way to split a hive:
Take the hive you have and move it about ten feet away. In its place put a new hive that looks pretty similar to the old one. Take about half the brood and bees from the parent hive and put that in your new hive. If you see the queen, she should go with the hive that was moved, to help hold the bees to it.
As with any split, your chances are greatly improved if you can put a mated queen in the queen-less portion. Otherwise, most of the time they will raise a new one on their own.
There are as many ways of splitting hives as there are beekeepers, this is just one very simple one. Good luck!
