Just for the record the myth or urban legend about "snake oil" is simply a combination of racism and (monopolistic) salesmanship on the part of the early 18th century Allopathic medical community in trying to get rid of their competition, the Chinese snake oil, used for pain relief.
This was proven in 1989 by a nutrition-oriented physician from California; Dr. Richard Kunin who decided to find out just what was in snake oil that may have given it this pain relieving ability. He tried to have his study published in JAMA but was naturally refused.
