I like to point folks to FAOSTAT.  I am not sure where they get their numbers
from, but I assume they are credible.  FAOSTAT indicates 2,301,000 colonies in
the US in 2007 and 2,624,000 colonies in 2012, an increase of 323,000 colonies.
