Hi Susan
Surprisingly there is no really good bible for clay pipes that focuses
on this period. Nowhere near my library at the moment but some of
the encyclopaedic historical archaeology works have a reasonable
overview chapter, from memory.
Some might mention Adrian Oswald's _Archaeology of the clay tobacco
pipe_, in the British Archaeological Reports series. This is very
British focussed and is weakest post-1800 when the export trade goes
off in a bigger way than ever before.
An essential first stop is the [UK] Society for Clay Pipe Research
- http://scpr.co/index.html
They are continually adding to their site's resources section.
cheers
Denis

Subject:Clay smoking pipes
Can someone please recommend a good reference book on clay smoking
pipes? I need references to pipes dating circa 1800-1940.
Thanks,
S. Walter
