Joe,
These likely would have been from black gums (black tupelo, Nyssa
sylvatica) or sweet gums (Liquidambar styraciflua), which have a
tendency to be naturally hollow. The trunks were often used for bee
boxes, rabbit boxes, etc., hence the name "bee gum" and "rabbit gum" to
describe these sorts of log-made contraptions.
