> If the 20th century was the Age of the Gene, the 21st century promises to be the Age of The Environment, and of Gene Expression (all of which is environment dependent). So perhaps the current round of interest in development and evolution will not fall victim to the cyclic amnesia that has afflicted it in the past, submerging one after another the evo- devo insights of Darwin, Bateson, Baldwin, Schmalhausen, Goldschmidt, Waddington, and others pioneers whose arguments on this subject were too isolated from the central research efforts of their times to have a lasting effect on the collective mind.
