Hi Bill:

I don't think the size of the cavity is really crucial. I have been in no 
shape for beekeeping the last two years, so my hives have been badly 
neglected. One thing I have learned from this is that if a swarm is going to 
use old bee boxes, they almost always pick ones that are piled three or more 
high and prefer ones with an entrance near the top. I think the height is 
more important than the volume.
