Warning:  This only works if the old Q and new Q are equally in full lay.  Very risky if old Q is worn out and  being superseded - which must generally be the prime reason for replacement. 
Bro Adam was into improving stocks whenever he thought he had better genetic material - not maintaining productive apiaries. 

A slow-release cage will generally be safer as Peter has indicated.
