I was a participant in the workshop that lead to the spin-off of this article. As I mentioned before, the lead author is a long-time EPA hazard/risk assessment specialist, coming from a Superfund background, one is a Canadian with a similar background, and two are well respected scientists with backgrounds in bees and toxicology.
The workshop had several risk assessment specialists, including Glen Suter, who more or less established the discipline of risk assessments that use measurement and assessment endpoints (he literally wrote the book on this approach) plus a broad array of bee research specialists and people like Tom Steeger from EPA. The overall workshop report has been discussed here.
This report is consist with the outcomes of the workshop and an application of a Risk Assessment protocol similar to what EPA would use on Superfund sites, which are often the center of public concern, often involving litigation. As a 20+ year investigator of Superfund Hazardous Waste sites, I can attest that EPA sets the bar high when it comes to data gathering and investigation for risk assessments.
