Years ago when returning from our first holiday in India we brought back
quite a few kilos of honey that we had been given by various beekeepers; we
also brought back kilos of coffee beans and cashew nuts together with a
large box of various spices. It was not until we landed that I saw the
warning notices.
I went into the red customs area and told them what we had; the reply
surprised me: 'not interested'! Some months later I was looking at the
Customs and Excise website which was quite specific on the countries from
which you could legitimately bring in more than a kilo of honey - and India
was not one of them! I rang them and told them about my experiences: that
provoked quite a strong response about the Customs department at Gatwick
airport.
I asked why the limit of a kilo had been set. Apparently that was
considered to be an appropriate amount for personal use. They were unable
to explain why Germany had been able to import 10 tonnes into the EU from
India the previous year - and of course once into the EU it could
legitimately be moved here.
Best wishes
