ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

The best campaigns are run by firms that know your philanthropic region and
organizations your size.
So the key is not someone who's done work with science centers, but a firm
who has done good work in your area with non-profit culturals or education
who are about your size. (non-profit culturals and education non-profits
will share donors with you. And they also share a key relationship to our
business model -- making donors and friends one person at a time since we
don't have grateful alumni or patients)
If this is a first campaign, you also want to know their experience with
first campaigns.
Ann, I know you are super well-networked. Get on the horn and talk with
your colleagues. Ask the trustees who are going to be in your campaign
cabinet too since they will be part of the selection. Interview at least 3
firms. You'll learn a lot and your trustees can have buy-in with the firm
they will be working with.
Buy a feasibility study. It's worth it.
Don't buy a monthly retainer....it makes a lot more sense to pay more/hour
and use the hours you need when you need them than buy a retainer. (If a
firm pushes retainer or in-house counsel, run, don't walk away. You want
them to bring you a successful campaign...not bring them a successful
business model) If you need extra staff, just push work in your shop down
to temps and do the high end relationship building work yourself. At the
end of the campaign, you'll have much deeper relationships....
Good luck!
