Yes a fascinating story - I would never have guessed that, in trying to guess which performers in a music competition actually won the competition, only those viewers who saw the video of the performers, with the sound off, guessed the winners correctly. The ones who listened to the audio only, or who viewed the video with audio, were not as correct.

Then again, we're in an age where we say 'I went to see the symphony last night,' not 'I went to hear the symphony...'

As "The Museum of Hawai'i," Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum's mission is to be a gathering place and educational center that actively engages people in the presentation, exploration and preservation of Hawai'i's cultural heritage and natural history, as well as its ancestral cultures throughout the Pacific.

A really interesting story on NPR this morning by Shankar Vedantam. I've attached the story and also the referencing paper, so those of you who want can cut to the study. Maybe the effect helps explained why video conferencing, despite its drawbacks and flaws is better than simply listening. Perhaps, it's better to simply see a silent video image rather than hear sound as well in some cases? Here I reflect back on the very first televised Presidential Debates between Nixon and Kennedy. Nixon won in the audio but lost the in video feed.

With respect to museum work there are a host of connections to multi-modality presentations, and perhaps even simply watching other people do exhibits.
