I understand that replacing grass verges with flowering plants is popular in
some continental cities (Germany I think); it has cut the cost of
maintenance (esp mowing) very significantly - and looks better. There are
some trials starting here in the UK.
Whether it is a good idea for bees to forage on potentially contaminated
flowers may be a question that needs some research. I do not think that I
would wish to eat honey gathered from the verges of busy roads.
