This is a problem for any field-realistic trial involving
pesticides--finding controls that aren't exposed to contaminants in the
combs. Foundation wax generally contains residues of lipophilic
pesticides. Most of the pre-neonic insecticides were lipophilic to some
degree.
However, in the case of the neonics, since they are not lipophilic, this
problem would be less applicable to studies involving them. The bees would
still be exposed to residues of fluvalinate, coumaphos, etc., but not to
starting residues of neonics.
