Pete noted that some lindens are toxic to bumblebees.
What evidence is there, Pete....do bumblebees just go ahead and Kamikaze pollinate the poison tree? How do we know whether they are oblivious to the toxic nature of the tree, or whether there are just a few random losers that do it while the others stay away?
Many animals know enough to avoid "natural" toxins. Taste, smell, etc clue them in and they avoid the bad stuff. Even humans know enough (mostly) to stay away from poisonous mushrooms, poison ivy, and so on.....the few that don't, get sick and/or die, but the human race in general is not compromised by those few episodes.
I'd like to know how serious the problem with lindens is, compared to a typical pesticide application.
