In essence the study detected a 3.5% per year decrease in bird populations
in areas of high concentrations of imidacloprid in ground water in the
Netherlands. The study showed correlation but stayed away from causation.
The take on the study ranges from the rational to wild extrapolation.
In essence, fewer insects result in fewer birds. Some newspaper articles
say that the birds are being killed. They are not.
Of interest, in every newspaper article it is a given that the neonics are
wiping out the bee population with the Harvard study as the proof.
If there is an issue with the neonics, ground water will be it (water
soluble). Coupled with that are application methods (drench is primary).
Bees, however, are not.
