The compact arrangement of worker brood in the comb may be protective. Generally no damage is caused by the light shaking of the brood. A queen sells for about twenty five dollars or more, while that much money will get a pound of workers, making a worker worth less than a penny. A damaged queen therefor represents a significant loss, while the loss of a handful of workers due to rough handling may not even be noticed.
