As an aside, according to Eva Crane (The World History of Beekeeping and
Honey Hunting) the Kenyan honey bees are scutellata - not adonsonii.
Adonsonii's area is along the west coast of Africa. Perhaps the two
species are about the same size - I don't know - but yes, traditionally
beekeepers throughout most of Africa used horizontal log, bark or woven
hives hung from trees or mounted on stumps.
