ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************
In the 1980s, The Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science (a.k.a. Buhl Science Center, Pittsburgh's original science and technology museum from 1939 to 1991) had a strong relationship with the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the local chapter of the Society of Analytical Chemists. This strong relationship came from connections to those organizations from Buhl's President at that time, Joshua C. Whetzel, who was a trained chemist. In addition to volunteers, these organizations helped with exhibit funding.
Additionally, in the mid-1980s Buhl held a special program/reception with the local chapter of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. At the event, we invited interested scientists to volunteer where their interests coincide with Buhl programs and exhibits.
This was fairly successful. However, we found that, to retain a scientist's interest in volunteering at Buhl, we had to make sure that they were involved in something where they did not begin to feel that they were wasting their valuable time. So, having them volunteer at a regular time may not be the best for these volunteers. It may be better to call on them when there is a special project or program that best fits their expertise.
