Here in the UK it used to be recommended that swarms of unknown origin
(that might be carrying AFB) should be housed first of all in an
'isolation apiary' in a cardboard box and allowed to build their own
comb therein. After a few days, the bees were shaken out for transfer
to fresh foundation in the home apiary and the cardboard box and
contents burned.
Where destruction is not compulsory and shaking onto foundation, as
recently described here, is practiced, the interim 'cardboard box'
technique might provide added insurance.
