I can't say I ever embraced the "honey excluder" mentality of the queen "includer" (Hey, it keeps her "in" as well as "out"), but then I use upper entrances, a 7/8" hole drilled/augered into the lower face of my super...definitely NOT in the handhold...much to the chagrin of my traditionalistic brethren, who also disagree with the color of my hives. In the tradition of Henry Ford, you can paint your hives any color you choose, as long as it's white.
And why, you may ask, do I choose a 7/8" inch hole? Because my 1" drill bit got too dull!
I have noticed, anecdotally, that my honey production is linked directly to my swarm prevention measures, and location in my part of Southeast Missouri contributes greatly to the amount of honey harvested.
