Seems to me that once we accept that bees do thin the walls via mechanical means (I think everyone agrees on that?), then the logical endpoint of thinning the walls as much as possible _is_ a hexagon. I don't see the need for liquified round cells snapping into place, thinned walls of adjacent round tubes end up hexagonal.
