Good morning,
Do you know why the
code of sugars on cell is more mysterious and just as important as the genetic
code? Do you about the illegal sugar that is responsible for the rarest blood type,
or how RNA first did the job of all proteins and nucleic acids, or that DNA
comes in triple and quadruple helices, not just a double helix?
These are some of the recent topics on a free online
resource developed to increase learner engagement and educator content
knowledge. “As Many Exceptions As Rules” tells the stories of organisms that
break biological rules or norms in order to survive and thrive. Through these
stories, the core concepts of the science are reinforced.
The resource can be accessed at : http://biologicalexceptions.blogspot.com
Posted weekly, each story includes pertinent vocabulary with
etymology, interesting questions to spark discussion, links to the reports from
the latest research on the subject being discussed, and a list of online
resources for more information and classroom activities.
Upcoming stories will include a discussion of how
nucleotides are used for more than just DNA and RNA. We will also take three
posts to talk about the biology of zombies – diseases that can mimic zombism
and the history of real zombies; a discussion of whether zombies can be
considered a form of life; and zombies in nature as a result of infections that
can rob organisms of free will!
If you wish to receive weekly e-mail notifications of new
posts, reply to the sender individually.
