Duration: 90 minutes

DESCRIPTION:

Join Calendar in the Sky team members, Amy Grochowski and Salvador Acevedo, as they discuss best practices and strategies for Latino engagement. Amy will discuss a collaborative community project at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque, NM that engages Latino audiences in informal science education. Strategies for reaching audiences, lessons learned about collaboration and best practices for programming will be highlighted. Salvador will discuss the differences between outreach and engagement models, and ideas on how to develop the cultural competency that you need in your organization. Informal educators interested in implementing culturally relevant programming with limited resources will find this presentation particularly useful.

PRESENTER BIOS:

Salvador Acevedo is President of Contemporanea, an audience engagement consulting agency and for more than 20 years, as an executive, consultant and researcher, he has worked with numerous educational institutions, corporations and foundations on projects ranging from audience research and program evaluation to organizational transformation, always with the goal of adapting practices and policies to changes in society. Being bilingual and bicultural gives him the ability to more easily recognize the common-ground bases for successful solutions.

Salvador is a regular speaker in conferences around the country on topics of cultural participation, cultural competence, and demographic and technology trends. Salvador earned a masters degree in Communications from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, a diploma in marketing from the University of California, Berkeley, and is certified by Research in Values and Attitudes, Inc. (RIVA, Inc.) as a qualitative researcher.

Amy Grochowski has been an informal science educator in museums and science centers for over 13 years. She is currently Curator of Education at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque, NM where her recent work has focused on exhibitions and programs about Maya science, culture and art. Prior to working at the Maxwell Museum, she taught science and nature programs at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and the Detroit Science Center. Her background in museum education combined with degrees in the natural sciences has instilled in her a passion for teaching about the connection of people to the natural world. She also strives to promote understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and worldviews in her education programs.

ABOUT CALENDAR IN THE SKY:

Calendar in the Sky is a NASA-funded project led by UC Berkeley to engage the American public, particularly Latino audiences, in NASA science (space exploration, astronomy, planetary and Earth sciences, etc.) via the broad interest in Maya culture. We are conducting a series of webinars for educators on NASA science and Maya astronomy. Following the webinars, attendees will be given access to private discussion boards on the project website (www.calendarinthesky.org<http://www.calendarinthesky.org>) where they can discuss the webinar topics and exchange ideas and resources for educational programming with colleagues. The webinars will be recorded and archived on the website.

Please pass this message on to any colleagues you think would be interested in attending.
