SHB I have found there are several triggers that start the females
laying, hot and humid and you disturb the hive (inspection, harvesting
or just smoking). This action causes the bees to release the beetles
that they are corralling then the beetles start laying eggs. The other
triggers are that the hive is in trouble. The adult beetle does eat
drone pupa also.
I control SHB in the honey house with a dehumidifier set to its
highest setting any honey left exposed turns to taffy.
