Texas State Parks seeks aqualified archeologist to be a cultural resources coordinator for our regionaloffice in the Houston area. This position will manage cultural resources in the14 state parks from Galveston Island and Sea Rim on the coast, to Mission Tejasin the Piney Woods, to Lake Somerville. We are looking for someone with astrong background in archeology and the skills to work with others in differentprofessions. The position reviews proposed construction projects on the parksand conducts archeological investigations to ensure compliance with theAntiquities Code of Texas and the National Historic Preservation Act. PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS:  TPWD Cultural Resources Program Office, 14200 Garrett Road, Houston, TX 77044
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:Under the direction of the Cultural Resources Program Director, this position is responsible for coordinating all activities with the potential to affect cultural resources within assigned region.  Performs advanced (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work. Responsible for ensuring agency compliance with state and federal antiquities laws, including the Texas Administrative Code, State Park Operational Rules, the Antiquities Code of Texas, the National Historic Preservation Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act.  Reviews proposed projects on lands owned or managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).  Responsible for developing scopes of work, requests for proposals, and selection, management, and oversight of contracted archeological consultants.  Develops cultural resources management plans, and archeological site monitoring plans for individual state parks, natural areas, and state historic sites.  Provides technical assistance and staff support to operations, site superintendents, and other agency programs.  Functions as a member of project teams and performs work in the field and lab, including survey, testing, artifact analysis, and report preparation for inclusion in the annual TPWD report to the Texas Historical Commission on cultural resources investigations.  This position is involved in outreach activities within and outside the agency to highlight TPWD’s commitment to the management and conservation of cultural resources and to engender stewardship in the visiting public through education.  This position has stop-work authority over all regional activities that may affect cultural resources integrity.  Provides assistance to the Cultural Resources Program Director, as needed.  Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
