University of Oulu, Finland
Professor of Archaeology
The Faculty of Humanities of the University of Oulu announces a tenure-track opening for a Professor of Archaeology, with a special research focus on northern Fenno-Scandinavia, to start 1.8.2013.
The academic field for this chair is defined as Archaeology with a special research focus on northern Fenno-Scandinavia. The newly appointed professor will work within the Faculty of Humanities together with and alongside other staff in the field of archaeology: four tenured university lecturers, one research technician, and ten or so postdoctoral research fellows and doctoral students. Archaeology is organized in the Faculty of Humanities of Oulu University together with cultural anthropology to form a combined introductory year of undergraduate studies which allows students to progress subsequently to a main-subject bachelor's and master's degree in either archaeology or cultural anthropology. Twenty applicants are accepted every year onto this initial shared undergraduate study program. The main areas of research in archaeology in the Faculty are currently the prehistory and protohistory of northern Finland, historical archaeology, classical archaeology, material cultural heritage, and bioarchaeology, all of which support the Faculty's official focus area of cultural identity and interaction.
The newly appointed professor, working together both with the other members of staff and with the postgraduate and undergraduate students in the field, will be responsible for the research and teaching in archaeology and for their development. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation with the other subject areas within the Faculty of Humanities, with the other faculties and special research units of Oulu University, and with other research institutes and universities both in Finland and abroad. In accordance with Section 33 of Finland's Universities Act (Yliopistolaki 33 §) the newly appointed professor must undertake and supervise scholarly research, provide teaching based upon it, keep abreast of developments in their field, and actively participate both in building bridges with the local community and in developing academic cooperation worldwide. The successful applicant for this professorial chair will have: a doctorate; a high level of scholarly competence; experience in leading scholarly research; proven ability to give both first-rate research-based teaching and thesis supervision; and clear evidence of their collaboration in international partnerships in their research field. The assessment of the varied merits of the applicants will pay special attention to the following: scholarly publications; research-driven findings of scholarly value; teaching experience and teacher training; the ability to produce teaching material; any other teaching merits and distinctions relevant to the post; a demonstration lecture; and proof of supervision of successfully defended doctoral theses. Special note will also be made of: active participation in the academic community; other possible practical knowledge of and experience in their academic field; success in gaining supplementary research funding; scholarly work abroad; and international responsibilities and commitments. The language used both for teaching and examining within the University of Oulu is Finnish, but it is possible to use English for teaching and lecturing.
The salary of the appointed professor will be set at level 8, 9 or 10 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to this basic salary, supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3% of whatever salary scale (8-10) is set for the post.
Applications must accord with the formal format guidelines of the University of Oulu, obtainable either by telephone (+358-294-484108), or by e-mail ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) or from the Appendix link on the University's 'Job Opportunities' webpage (www.oulu.fi/english/jobs<http://www.oulu.fi/english/jobs>).
