Margaret:

That is misleading and you know better. The proposed CMI mining operations
are ALL outside of the Virginia City city limits and the established
Virginia City Historic District AND in areas of previously permitted mining
and mineral processing activities. I have worked in the District since 1982
and did my MA Field School in Historical Archaeology there under Don
Hardesty. I have watched the area suffer from lack of good paying,
clean jobs. This uninformed xenophobia is what gives archaeology a bad
name. Nevada reclamation laws necessitate the recontouring and revegetation
of ANY mining or quarrying operation to a better state than now exists and
ANY mining operation in the Virginia City area has to undergo levels of
county, state and federal scrutiny that would make make PERMITTING OF ANY
mining under Virginia City (except, possibly, the reactivation of the Sutro
Tunnel) uneconomic AND economics are the name of the game. If you can't
permit it, you can't mine it.
