Thanks Gwyn for the leads.  So far we've found some preliminary information that 
street paver designs (methods of construction) changed through time although 
that line of information (City engineering drawings) is not well developed at 
this point.  Some information seems to suggest that the type of pavers changed 
through time as well with granite pavers followed by the use of brick pavers.  I 
should point out that the brick pavers were not replacements for the granite 
ones.   


There does appear to some evidence that some pavers were in response to the 
growing use of automobiles and possibly related to the use of various types of 
street cars.  One of the criterion we use in California is "associated with 
events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of 
California’s history and cultural heritage." One of our goals is to assess 
whether the pavers meets the criterion noted above.
