Cultural Heritage Institute

(apologies for cross-posting)

We are very excited to announce the formation of the Cultural Heritage Institute, as part of the Royal Agricultural University. The new Institute will be based in the refurbished former Carriage works of the Great Western Railway at Swindon (Wilts), after a multi-million-pound investment by Swindon Council, and very close to Historic England and National Trust headquarters. We will be offering Masters degrees in historical and landscape archaeology and heritage management, with the specific aim of training professionals, in collaboration with heritage organisations, and archaeological units for the academic year 2019-2020. Swindon lies in the centre of the fabulous Gloucestershire and Wiltshire landscapes, and an ideal place to study. The Royal Agricultural University was founded in 1845, and is one of the leading institutions for the study and management of the land, landscape and wider environments. These two programme in particular will be of interest to Histarch members. We also are developing research programmes and welcome PhD students.

 MSc in Historical Archaeology

https://www.rau.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/courses/msc-historical-archaeology

This programme explores the period from c.1500 to present day and offers an exciting research-informed programme that critically considers contemporary issues, challenges and developments. It will provide you with a robust philosophical, theoretical and ethical framework for exploring the remains of the recent past. There will be pathways in early European colonisation, 20th century conflict archaeology and the Archaeology of Industry.

MSc in Landscape Archaeology

https://www.rau.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/courses/msc-landscape-archaeology

The rapid growth of survey and visualisation technologies is transforming the nature of landscape archaeology. At the same time there are mounting pressures on landscapes from multiple factors including agriculture, forestry, recreation, urban expansion and climate change all of which demand an integrative approach to management and conservation. The course will offer a toolbox of skills ranging from landscape survey and recording to Remote Sensing, Geophysics and the Digital Landscape. You will also be introduced to key landscape shaping processes, particularly the integrated understanding and management of ‘natural’ and ‘cultural’ elements in the landscape.

For further information, contact Dr Geraint Coles, Director CHI, or Professor Mark Horton.
